The new guidebook for WA’s keenest bushwalkers!
This book highlights the wealth of wonderful – yet mostly poorly known – bushwalking opportunities in the parks, reserves and state forests of the Darling Range near Perth, Western Australia.
The 268 pages uniquely describe forty rewarding bushwalking routes not previously published in hard copy, including many photos, plus route maps and elevation profiles for each walk.
Each copy of this book also comes with the special bonus of a complimentary subscription to the WalkGPS website, giving access to downloadable GPS navigation files for all forty walks and maps for each of the walk routes; plus access to custom base maps for each walk area for import to the Avenza Maps smartphone navigation app.
These adventurous walks will especially appeal to self-reliant walkers eager to explore beyond the popular long distance Bibbulmun Track and the few trails of day walk length in the region. They are all day walks, averaging around 15km in length. They are also all circuit walks, avoiding any need for car shuffles and repeat walking of significant sections.
Most of the walks include at least some cross-country hiking along unmarked routes, often across challenging terrain; but they are mainly through mixed jarrah-marri eucalypt forest and wandoo woodlands which are mostly light and open and well suited for minimal impact bushwalking.
Though the region might appear to lack the dramatic landscapes of many walking destinations elsewhere, it offers the discerning bushwalker its own special and unique rewards, including the stunning beauty of the woodlands; the diversity of the wildflowers; the impressive granite outcrops; and the delight of spotting native animals in the wild.
Noteably, this is the first such book for adventurous bushwalkers in WA since the popular “Forests on foot – 40 walks in W.A.” (authors Kathy Meney and P.Brown) was published in 1985 for the then Campaign to Save Native Forests. Sadly, in the forty years since then, very little has changed for the protection of the Northern Jarrah Forests, with much of the mature forest now lost to bauxite strip-mining. Almost one third of the walk areas included in this new book remain under threat from anticipated further expansions of the mining, while many other long-popular areas not included in this book will also be impacted.
